"The Science of Nonviolence" Pilot Course a Success
From the National Peace Academy
"The Science of Nonviolence: Theory and Practice," a pilot course of the National Peacebuilding Peacelearning Certificate Program concluded on May 8. Offered in partnership and conducted by the Metta Center for Nonviolence in Berkeley, CA, the course provided students with a grounding in principled nonviolence.
"The Science of Nonviolence" will be the first step of a long and fruitful collaboration between the Metta Center and the National Peace Academy. The enthusiastic participation of the students makes this obvious, and heartwarming. One echoed the sentiments of many when he said, "I've been an activist most of my life and thought I was pretty conversant with nonviolence, but why did I never hear about these wonderful ideas, stories, and people."
Stephanie Van Hook, Co Director of the Metta Center and co-course instructor with Michael Nagler commented "the peacebuilding certificate is highly practical as an alternative to the present educational system, as a decentralized alternative solution based on the need for peace education -- and peace! It is my hope that nonviolence become a core unit in the curriculum of NPA. A peaceful future will need a creative method for resolving conflict. Thank you, NPA!"

BePeace Foundations Course
Rasur International, in partnership with The National Peace Academy's National Certificate Program is conducting a four day, 32-hour BePeace Foundations Course. The 2012 Peace Story : A Global Call to Action
The FUSION Foundation | Peace Walker Society
10 Things We Can Do to Contribute to Internal, Interpersonal, and Organizational Peace
(1) Spend some time each day quietly reflecting on how we would like to relate to ourselves and others.
(2) Remember that all human beings have the same needs.
(3) Check our intention to see if we are as interested in others getting their needs met as our own.
(4) When asking someone to do something, check first to see if we are making a request or a demand.
(5) Instead of saying what we DON'T want someone to do, say what we DO want the person to do.
(6) Instead of saying what we want someone to BE, say what action we'd like the person to take that we hope will help the person be that way.
(7) Before agreeing or disagreeing with anyone's opinions, try to tune in to what the person is feeling and needing.
(8) Instead of saying "No," say what need of ours prevents us from saying "Yes."
(9) If we are feeling upset, think about what need of ours is not being met, and what we could do to meet it, instead of thinking about what's wrong with others or ourselves.
(10) Instead of praising someone who did something we like, express our gratitude by telling the person what need of ours that action met.
The Center for Nonviolent Communication (CNVC) would like there to be a critical mass of people using Nonviolent Communication language so all people will get their needs met and resolve their conflicts peacefully.

Resources for Developing Nonviolent Communication
Nonviolent Communication (NVC)[1] includes a simple method for clear, empathic communication, consisting of four steps: observations, feelings, needs, requests.
NVC aims to find a way for all present to get what really matters to them without the use of guilt, humiliation, shame, blame, coercion, or threats. It is useful for resolving conflicts, connecting with others, and living in a way that is conscious, present, and attuned to the genuine, living needs of yourself and others.
